Ōkami (大神) tells the tale of a wolf-god named Amaterasu who must prevent an evil being known as Orochi from taking over the beautiful world of feudal Japan. This will be the last PS2 game that will get 5 stars from me. This game is just jaw-droppingly gorgeous. The screenshots just do not do this game justice. It looks much better in motion. In fact, at the time of this writing [2007-03-09] my current desktop wallpaper at my office is art from Okami. Don't get me wrong, this would have looked much better in HD. It is unfortunate that the studio, Clover Games, was closed down by Capcom shortly after this game was released. Clover was also responsible for the fun sidescrolling romp that is Viewtiful Joe. Okami reminds me of Zelda. It plays in a very similar fashion. There is nothing wrong with that design approach in my opinion. There really is not enough action-RPG games these days with all the sandbox (think GTA) and FPS games.
