Halo: Combat Evolved
The game that really put the Xbox on the map. Overall it is your basic shooter wrapped in a strange sci-fi plot. I've played through the PC version that was a pack in with my Sound Blaster card. The two versions are identical save for the control differences. I picked up the Xbox version for two reasons. One, it just seemed against the rules (whos rules?) to own an Xbox without Halo. Akin, to owning a NES without Super Mario Bros. Two, I wanted another multiplayer game to play when I have friends over. Halo supports 4 player split screen play, and two player cooperative play. Both I find much more fun than the single player adventure.
Halo is not a bad game in single player. It's just ho-hum. It did not draw me in the way that Half-Life 2 or Doom III does. The main character "Master Chief" just seems too good to be true. The Captain Janeway of 1st person shooters. He can do anything without failure or question. The environments are fairly bland as well. I like the outdoor areas, but they need more variety. Driving the Warthog vehicle in the game is like driving on ice at all times. It flips over far to easlily killing your passengers most of the time. There also isn't much variety in enemies, which by the way you mow down hundreds of since the AI is farily week. Granted they take cover from your fire, but they do so in very predictable ways. Still, there is just enough style and flair to actually keep me playing all the way to the end. Even though the last part of the game is a return to levels you've already been to. Hmmmm.
